WHAT: New Mandatory 3-Hour Training for Custody Evaluators: Children with Developmental Disabilities

HB 2340 (Texas Family Code 107.104(f)) requires child custody evaluators to have a 3-hour training related to the care of a child with an intellectual disability or developmental disability. Texas AFCC is proud to offer this training for custody evaluators in Texas. Specific learning objectives include gaining knowledge about children with developmental disabilities, including intellectual disability with regard to:
- Specifics related to the care of a child with an intellectual or developmental disability
- Specifics related to the education of a child with such a disability
- Types of therapy and services that are available for children with such disabilities
- How to help parents learn how to prepare their child for independent living, and
- Methods for addressing physical or mental challenges.
Sandra Roland, PhD is a Licensed Psychologist who is also Board Certified in Child and Adolescent Psychology. She began her career as a school psychologist, completing evaluations for children with developmental disorders. She also worked as a director in special education in the areas of evaluation and disability compliance. In 2011, she switched gears and became the director of the Psychology Department at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. This experience added knowledge regarding children with developmental and medical needs. Since opening her private practice in 2017, she has focused on evaluation and expert consultation in the areas of family law and special education law.
This course is pending approval for 3.0 hours of Minimum Continuing Legal Education credit by the State Bar of Texas Committee on MCLE, of which 1.5 credit hours may apply to legal ethics/professional responsibility credit
